Finland's annual world sauna championship had to be called off after Russian competitor Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy was pronounced dead in the finals. the 110°C temperatures for 6 minutes proved to be unbearable for him as well as fellow competitor Timo Kaukonen who is being hospitalized for burns.
Both beat 130 people to get to the finals where they lasted the longest in a sauna 110°C in temperature while water is added every 30 seconds.
Now I may have a personal bias here, seeing as I do not find saunas enjoyable to begin with at a reasonable temperature, but who would want to sign up for this?! Apparently the head of the competition claims all first aid rules are followed...
Looks like a big fail on their part. As a result, the world sauna competition has been shut down for good.

I entered this once, got 3rd place so nobody really heard about it. Its not as bad as it seems.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what kind of prize the winner was supposed to get for roasting them-self ... perhaps a golden turkey baster!
